Postpartum / Perinatal Mood
Disorders
Pregnancy and new motherhood are unique experiences for
each woman and can create many different feelings.
Emotions can range from excited and joyful to teary,
anxious and sad. About 80% of new mothers may feel
stressed or weepy. Most often these feelings are mild
and pass quickly, but sometimes they become more
serious. It’s important to know the difference, and get
help when it is needed.
A baby’s physical and emotional growths are responsive
to a healthy mother/ baby relationship and waiting too
long to receive treatment can have long lasting effects.
Treatment may include counseling, safe medication and
support groups. Whether symptoms are mild or severe help
is available and women do recover.
